Staying hydrated is essential for our horses, anytime of the year but especially in summer, after travel and after exercise. It is therefore essential that your horse is happy to drink anywhere - from puddles, creeks, dam, a strange water supply. Unfortunately our horses don't always comply with this requirement. So for finicky drinkers it is important to teach them slowly to accept alternate water supplies.
In addition, an excellent helping maintain hydration is to teach your horse to drink first from molasses water, then from molasses water spiked with electrolytes. Use a ten litre household bucket, add an electrolyte e.g Recharge plus a tablespoon of molasses. Offer this as soon as you unload your horse from the float or immediately after exercise cool down.
